Intersession 2019 Project Focus: shelters-db
Mission Statement:
One of the biggest issues with placing individuals who need emergency housing in shelters is lack of knowledge surrounding availability. There are over 40 homeless shelters in Baltimore, yet we don't know if they are being utilized. Current databases often contain inaccurate information and links to dead websites and phone numbers. Shelters-db is an open source initiative to create up-to-date databases of emergency/homeless shelter housing data to the homeless and case workers to effectively utilize emergency shelters services fill bed availabilities. Stemming from a hack created at the Fall 2018 HopHacks Hackathon that won the "Best Hack for Greatest Social Impact", this Intersession, students will work to build this software on the Paris-based city management software Lutece. Check out their slide presentation below!
